Customize query timeout in Explore
You can define how many seconds Explore queries run before automatically timing out.
When to change the query timeout threshold
By default, queries in Explore run for one minute, then automatically time out if not
complete. For example, when a user opens a liveboard, queries run to load each
visualization. Complex queries may time out and show an error message after one
minute. You can increase or decrease this threshold:
- Increase the timeout threshold if you regularly need to accommodate complex, long-running queries. Note that changing the timeout threshold doesn't optimize queries. Try to optimize a complex query before assuming you need to increase the threshold.
- Decrease the timeout threshold to reduce resource waste and cost.
Timeout configuration is at the level of an Explore connection, and it applies to all queries of data in that connection. Typically you have a single connection from the Data Studio integration datastore to Explore, so the threshold applies to all Explore queries. To learn more about connections, see How data flows from Data Studio to Explore.
