Subclauses with numeric and option clause terms in APD

APD subclauses support fixed, referenced, and calculated minimum and maximum clause term values to enforce product rules and reduce manual errors. APD clause term design uses numeric and option terms across parent-child clause hierarchies.

When specifying minimum and maximum values for numeric and option clause terms, the value can be calculated or referenced. Terms of type number, decimal, or monetary amount on the Coverages, Exclusions, or Conditions tab can be fixed, referenced, or calculated:

  • A fixed value is a single numeric value, for example 1000.
  • A referenced value is a reference to the value of a term in a clause of the same type in the current clause's parent hierarchy.
  • A calculated value is calculated using a numeric function, for example MIN(LIABILITY).

Restrictions on clauses and clause terms in referenced values in APD

APD referenced values keep subclause limits aligned with parent coverage limits for consistent product rules. APD enforces clause and term restrictions so product designers avoid invalid references and preserve numeric data integrity.

A common use case for a referenced value is a rule that says that the uninsured motorist liability limit must be the same as the bodily injury liability limit. The value of a term in a coverages clause can reference the value of a term in a coverages clause in the parent hierarchy, but not a term in a conditions or exclusions clause. The type of the term's value must match the type of the referenced value, for example monetary amount, and must be a numeric type. A referenced value appears in the term as <referenced>.

Restrictions on clauses and clause terms in calculations in APD

APD calculated values enforce clause and clause term restrictions that protect minimum and maximum formulas from invalid edits. Product designers can safely manage parent clauses and subclauses while preserving calculation integrity and preventing configuration errors.

Clauses and clause terms that are referenced in calculated values of minimum and maximum values have the following restrictions:
  • Removal
    • You cannot remove a clause if any of its terms, including terms on subclauses, is referenced in a calculated value.
    • You cannot remove a clause term that is referenced in a calculated value.
  • Change type
    • You cannot change the type of a clause term if it is referenced in a calculated value.
    • You cannot change the type of a parent clause term if its minimum or maximum value is calculated.
  • Unassign clause
    • You cannot unassign a clause from its parent clause if it or any of its subclauses is referenced in a calculated value.
